The term zombie always associate with the undead flesh eating human, even though the term actually come from Haitian folklore. Modern day pop culture zombie is defer from haitian folklore definition of zombie, for haitian a zombie refer to an animated corpse raised by magical means, such as witchcraft. For example dead persons physically revived by the act of necromancy of a bokor sorcerer. Zombies remain under the control of the bokor as their personal slaves, since they have no will of their own.
However modern day pop culture zombie we seen in the movie not involve any superstitious, it focus more on scientific way that alter human brain function that cause cannibalism and aggressive behavior (act like zombie), through viruses and other parasitic organism. and believe it or not it can be done today, through:
1. Rabies Virus Hybrid.
According to Jonathan D. Dinman, PhD, Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland, Rabies Infection is nearly 100 percent lethal, i.e. it turns you into the walking dead (for a while at least), and it causes you to change your behavior by reprogramming you to bite other people to spread the infection. Now if only it kept the corpse walking around. Essentially, the rabies virus would need to be slightly altered, or would have to evolve, in a way to keep people kicking and screaming for their next victim rather than killing them off just a few days after symptoms occur.
Rabies has to incubate inside the body before showing signs of infection, which includes anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, paralysis, agitation, hyper salivation, difficulty swallowing and hydrophobia — fear of water. This incubation period can last anywhere from 10 days to a year, meaning a “zombie virus outbreak” may look a little slower and less “viral” than movies tend to portray.
The idea of a virus evolving is not unheard of, and it’s also already being witnessed with another microorganism. Superbugs are a sub-population of microorganisms, usually bacteria, that have antibiotic resistance. In layman’s terms, superbugs have found a way past our armor, and it did it in just 90 years after penicillin was first discovered.
So how would rabies evolve into a superbug-like-virus that could potentially be deemed a zombie virus? Dr. Dinman may have the answer. “So, you start with Rabies virus, but you engineer it so that it doesn’t actually kill you. It just takes over your brain and makes you want to bite other people to spread itself. Infected people just become automatons devoted to spreading the virus. The main viral property you’d want to change would be to convert it from causing an acute infection (like Ebola which tends to kill the victim quickly) to persistent infection (like Herpes, which stays with you for your entire life). Functions you’d want the infected person to retain would be metabolism (so they can produce more virus) and motility (so they can get from victim to victim).
2. The Zombie Virus LQP-79
LQP-79 its supposedly a virus that causes brain deterioration and leads its victim to become cannibalistic. It is also said to be highly contagious leading people to believe it will cause some kind of zombie apocalypse. First Report was to the now famous Face Eating incident in Miami. Rudy Eugene attacked Ronald Poppo and started to gnaw at the elder Homeless mans face. Police later shot and killed Rudy Eugene. At first bath salts we’re thought to be the cause. But in later reports it was only found that he had THC, in his system.
On the official LQP-79 website They claim: The LQP-79 zombie virus infects the mind and will not make you look like a zombie is minutes as has been portrayed on television and movies. The zombie infection will make you crave the taste of flesh and want to eat not only people but animals as well. The LQP-79 virus is a blood born mental illness which infects the mind but does not make people want to eat brains as has been previously reported. The craving is for fresh blood very much like a vampire infection and not for brain matter.
The website also claims “the LQP-79 virus is a result of the 79th attempt made at formulating a Lysergic Quinine Protein for use in diametric control of thought processes and the function of the mind. Based on research by Alfred Rastapopoulos at the University of Meropis in Meropis, Greece.”
Whats interesting about this little tidbit is that Dr. Alfred Rastapopoulos is the main administrator for the website. Also one of its main points of evidence is a picture of an article from Huffington Post.
3. The Bath Salts Zombie
Bath salts is a term used in North America to describe a number of recreational designer drugs. The name derives from instances in which the drugs have been sold disguised as true bath salts. Users of bath salts have reported experiencing symptoms including headache, heart palpitations, nausea, and cold fingers.Hallucinations, paranoia, and panic attacks have also been reported, and news media have reported associations with violent behavior, heart attack, kidney failure, liver failure, suicide, an increased tolerance for pain, dehydration, and breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue.
